Operated by Minnkota Power Cooperative, the Young Station is a mine-mouth generating station that uses lignite coal supplied from the adjacent BNI Coal mine. Unit 1 has the capacity to produce 250 megawatts (MW), while Unit 2 has the ability to produce 455 MW.
The Young Station is built to last. After more than four decades of service, the facility has reached milestones in reliability and performance in recent years. In 2020, Unit 1 was available to produce power 93.9% of the time, while Unit 2 was available 93.0% of the time.
Young Station staff have a personal stake in ensuring the land, air and water near the plant are kept in pristine condition. They live, work and play in the surrounding communities. Approximately $425 million has already been invested at the Young Station to meet current emissions control standards.
The Young Station produces low-cost power for consumers in North Dakota and Minnesota. In 2018, Moody’s Investor Service included both Young Station units in a report on economically competitive coal plants.
